Coastal Lane County was pleasant today after a light east wind faded. Sunny
and afternoon high of about 58. Thanks to Tye Jeske, Daniel Farrar, Diane
Pettey, Caleb Centanni and Nolan Clements for good companionship. Coming back
to fogged-in Eugene was tough.
Highlights included a few Swamp Sparrow, the continuing two Long-tailed Dux
at Klootchman (visible from the upper pullout, slightly south) and a pair of
Black Scoters there (look north from the lowest pullout. Also there were
two Marbled Murrelets visible off the upper pullout.
At Bob Creek we found a loose clutch of loons beyond the surf line. The
group included a large brownish loon that held its bill slightly up. When it
turned the bill seemed yellow. The light was a little strange at the time
and the bird was not close so we were unable to get a firm grasp on it, but
if you’re in the area check it out. Also present 1-2 Common Loon, about 4-5
Pacific and one Red-throated. They were hanging near one red and one
yellowish float, though those are not permanent markers.
Plenty of WW Scoters moving around today, otherwise not a lot happening over
the ocean.
