Obol,
At approximately 7pm this evening I visited the wetland mentioned in the
subject line. I didn't try to see over the berm mentioned by Barb Combs in
her posting earlier today, but instead I walked through a space for
pedestrians beside the locked gate at the NW corner of the field near the
K.R. Nielsen Rd. intersection and walked around it. I had earlier read the
"rules and regulations" sign about 0.25-mile east and it did NOT say "No
Trespassing". Instead it was a generic sort of Eugene Parks and Open Space
(EP&OS) sign that talked about picking up your dog's waste, keeping dogs on
leash, no hunting, discharging or carrying firearms, restricted hours, etc.
Just inside the gate that I had walked around there was a "No Hunting" sign
added alongside the park boundary sign planted by (EP&OS). Anyway, I stayed
partially hidden by the tall grass and the birds pretty much ignored me. The
curlew called randomly a few times, and it got up and flew once in response
to a seemingly aggressive Mallard that got too close. I'm glad the berm is
there as it hides the many vehicles that clatter by on the dirt/gravel road,
and even though the traffic is noisy the birds seem to ignore it. Here is
my list:
Long-billed Curlew (1)
Greater Yellowlegs (10 +-)
Least Sandpiper (10 +-)
Gadwall (2)
Mallard (2)
Northern Pintail (2)
Canada Goose (30 +-)
Good Birding,
