On the floating docks of Lake Ewauna in downtown Klamath Falls, I had a
3rd/4th cycle darker-backed gull among the plethora of Ring-billeds and
smattering of California and Herring gulls. It is a larger gull, though
not as heavy as nearby Herring. First thought was a poorly-lit California
Gull giving the mantle a darker appearance. But its gizz, facial
expression, pale iris, and bill shape and pattern of markings eliminated it
as CAGU. Mantle color would be on the lighter side for LBBG (L. f.
graellsii?). Legs appeared washed out flesh/pink in the field, when
compared to the brighter pink of the Herring and rich yellow of the CAGU in
the same frame. Don't know if leg color at this age would be conspicuously
yellow. Some dark streaking on nape and neck consistent with LBBG.
Briefly considered Slaty-backed Gull (due to the pinkish legs), but my
research tells me it's a heavier gull with an even darker mantle. I've
included some photo attachments for your analysis (hopefully files not too
large). Would love to learn your thoughts.
