At 1015 today a subadult northern shrike was easily viewed from the north end
viewing shelter at Jackson Bottom Wetlands. Very little brown on this bird and
uppertail coverts look quite white but it has a pale lower mandible, slight
eye-ring and the mask is not jet black. My best guess is not full-on adult.
Did not get a good luck at wing patches in flight.
One adult bald eagle perched in the sentinel tree above and east of the nest
viewable from north viewing shelter. The pair has been seen moving about
together in the last few weeks and copulation and branch gathering was observed
on 1/20.
Water levels are dropping and trails around Kingfisher Marsh and out to Vic's
Point (Heyer's View) are open. With river stage at ~134 above Mean Sea Level
the main north south trail is still under water.
Beautiful day today so maybe the garter snakes will be out sunning and doing
their thing.
Good birding and naturizing.
