Yesterday two adult and two first year California Gulls were at Wapato Marsh, all four hanging out near one another on a mudflat. A least sandpiper was present as were numerous killdeer and a few spotted sandpipers. No sign of Wilson's phalaropes but I did not bird for long. The osprey nest at south end of pintail pond has been vacant for a week now. One adult osprey has been sighted in the area but it was paying no particular attention to the nest. Up until early July a pair was active at the nest with one bird apparently incubating through most of June. Don't know what happened but apparently the nest has failed. There were several observations of a third and at times a fourth bird around pintail pond in late May and in early June (perhaps more of June but I was not around) and the resident pair seemed to tolerate them in as much as one stayed on the nest and the other flew about the airspace over the pond without displaying overt aggression. Last year a pair was successful raising one young, the first year osprey nested at the bottom that we are aware of.
