A day late. At Tualatin NWR Friday morning I found a FLICKER foraging on the
ground near the viewing platform at the end of the forest trail. It had a
smooth brown face and neck with a red crescent on the nape. Otherwise normal
markings for our region. I could barely see the underside of the wings when it
flew into nearby trees, but they seemed orangish. There was no malar stripe, so
it was female rather than the male photographed recently on a feeder. Sorry, no
pics. Wanted to give a heads up.
The refuge and visitor center are open.
