The answer, as promised. Everyone made it immediately to the correct
section of the field guide. The flattened bird found just down the road
from the feather in question was a MOURNING DOVE. Because I'm such a
generous guy, everyone who guessed can have 50% off their OBOL subscription

I was out for my morning exercise a bit ago when I found this single
feather lying on the fog line around the corner from my driveway. No other
feathers around, but with all those shapes and shades, it has to be like
that puzzle piece that is really obvious once you know where it goes. So I
brought it home and took a picture to post to OBOL.
Habitat is Willamette Valley rural mixed farmland and forest. On one side
of the road is an unmowed field. The other side is a steep hillside with
mixed forest. The blood on the tips of the fibers is consistent with the
bird meeting its violent demise on that bit of road.
A bit of a spoiler: A few yards down the road, I encountered the flattened
remains of a specimen that I believe to have been the wearer of the single
feather. So at least I know that much now.
So take a guess, or ignore it, or wait for an answer tomorrow. All those
who make a public guess and get it right will get 50% off their
subscription fees to OBOL for the next year. :-)
