I was going to Stayton through Ankeny NWR and saw a birder I thought was
Brandon looking in the oaks where Ankeny Hill Rd ends at Buena Vista Rd.
It was Brodie instead, and I asked if he was looking for the reputed
Lewis's Woodpecker in the area. No, he hadn't heard about it but was
interested in it because he will lead an Audubon group here on Saturday
I got a text from him 10 minutes later and he had found the LEWO, down the
road along BV Rd a tenth of mile south
I circled back and in another 10 minutes I watched the Lewis's Woodpecker
on the very last Oregon White Oak as you go south on Buena Vista Rd, along
with a multi-family group of Western Bluebirds in the semi-parasitic oak
mistletoe and posted my list on ebird
I'm not a semi-parasitic botanist, but did you know that almost every tree
species has its own semi-parasitic mistletoe?
