Let's resurrect High Desert Conference.
When: March 19-27, 2016, to coincide with Spring Break.
Where: The South End of Blitzen Valley, let's organize ourselves, each of us
being as self -reliant as possible, at Page Springs Campground, at Steens
Mountain Resort, and at the Frenchglen Hotel, and if our numbers overflow, we
can camp gracefully on the Public Lands. By all means, if the mess is cleaned
up in time, we could return also to the Field Station.
Agenda:
1 Provide volunteer labor as directed by refuge scientists and professionals to
ensure the Pied-billed Grebe, and every other bird that depends on the
ecosystems of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, has a home in which to raise
its family in 2016.
2 Provide economic activity to the people of Harney County.
Let's show the people of Harney County who WE are, the smiling, happy, dare I
say socially well-adjusted people, with no guns, who love NATURE. Let's travel
to Burns in our thousands, and patronize the motels, the stores, and the
restaurants. Let's spend and spend our money and leave our political zeal at
home this time. Let's bring our healing energy instead.
And when we are confronted by the laggard mentality of a by-gone era, let us
dispassionately articulate our philosophy and our values, and remember that the
lowly human is an animal also, as worthy of respect as the Pied-billed Grebe.
For the birds - we should do this.
We can do this.
