On a pelagic cruise field trip off the coast of Oregon last year, we used the
following method to describe how far away a bird was from the ship:
When you are standing at the rail of the ship looking out to sea, imagine that
you are looking out at a 2-dimensional photo of the ocean and the sky.
If you say a bird is “halfway to the horizon”, you mean that the amount of
ocean you see “below" the bird is the same as the amount of ocean you see
“above” the bird in the imaginary photo.
Or, if you say the bird is “3/4 of the way to the horizon”, you mean that you
see 3/4 of the ocean “below” the bird in the imaginary photo, and 1/4 of the
ocean “above” the bird.
It seems like you could use this same method to point out pelagic species seen
from shore.
