Today Dave Irons and I birded the Newport area scouting for the Yaquina Bay CBC
tomorrow. We looked for the oriole coming to the feeders in the afternoon after
Wayne Hoffman gave us the correct location where it has been seen. Wayne had
sent us photos of this same oriole after it first showed up. In the photos the
bird seemed awfully richly colored for Bullock's but appeared to have both a
dark post ocular line and a black vertical line under the chin like a young
make Bullock's.
Now that we have seen the bird in the flesh and taken good photos we believe
this is an Orchard. There is no real line below the eye nor on the throat.
There is a dark spot at the base of the throat but this may be due a missing
feather or some other reason. In a number of my photos there is a shadow under
the bill but not in others. The color on the underparts is too rich for a
Bullock's and is too extensive below for any plumage except an adult male. In
flight, the tail is relatively short and somewhat square.
