I've known Harry since I started birding and went on field trips he led with
May 18, 1980 as memorable to Sauvie's Island that went on to the end of the
scheduled time while watching the Mt St Helen plum wherever on the island we
could see the mountain. Thank goodness the wind was blowing east.
No bird observation seam to surprise Harry like the time I rescued a breeding
plumage Common Loon 35 miles west of Chickahominy Reservoir laying in the
middle of the eastbound lane on Memorial Day weekend. I told Harry about it at
Malheur HQ and he said that happens as they migrate at night and a wet road
surface looks like water and on land they can't fly off. No big surprise to
Harry. I went to the reservoir to find an official to get permission to
capture the loon after I had moved it off the road, therefore the mileage
notation. The loon was very happy to be released in the reservoir. Harry was an
encyclopedia of knowledge about Oregon birds. RIP Harry.
