But since I am just coming off a primer on the (sub)species with thanks to
terrific reading material on the topic suggested by several people on this
list, I would be remiss if I failed to report the possibility.
I spent four and a half hours birding the park this morning. The first two
hours in dense fog with not much happening, then as the air cleared the
birds got busy and rewarded me with abundant good views of multiple
species.
The best bird early in the morning was a Black Phoebe. According to eBird,
this bird (species) as been observed on-and-off-again in the park all year.
I the hawk in question was observed near the entrance to the park as I was
leaving for the day. The lighting was poor and the subject flushed early.
Accordingly, the heavily cropped, over-cooked, dorsal view only photos
leave a lot to the imagination.
