Green Herons are one of several favorites for me. I find them to be quite
variable from year to year. Sometimes I see one over-wintering at Delta
Ponds in Eugene, but only in the odd year. Some years they show up in Feb
or Mar. but more typically April or May. It always surprises me when they
show up in Dec or Jan, or when they don't show up until April. I should
know by now that's just how they are. I just looked in eBird for Lane
County one year at a time for Jan - April 2014, then 2015, 2016 and indeed
the results look quite different each year, both in terms of number of
reports as well as the specific locations. I don't know if the Greenies
which stay the Winter rove around - which I suspect they do - or if they
stay in the same patch where they breed. Others may have more data to draw
from.
