While on a recent trip, we stopped for a break at the Say When
Casino/Restaurant in McDermitt, NV on Jan. 2. It was a chilly -4 degrees when
we stopped but warmer than the -15 when we left Rome, OR earlier in the
morning. To our surprise there were 4 Great-tailed Grackles in the parking
area. The casino is on the Nevada side of the state line but the street on the
north side of the building is the state line. The grackles along with some
House Sparrows were foraging under the parked vehicles and around the dumpsters
behind the establishment. Trying to get pics with my smart phone I flushed 2 of
the birds across the street into Oregon -- a new species for our Oregon state
lists.
