This morning a singing Grasshopper Sparrow was within 50 m south and southwest
of the prairie overlook platform off of Finley Rd. I could hardly believe it.
Will Wright arrived and the singing continued for nearly an hour but we could
never get a visual. I determined there were two birds, one to the SW and one
due S. They must have been singing from the ground or from within dense
vegetation. This is easily the earliest spring record I know of for Finley.
Usually we do not get them until May, often late May, but Hendrik had one 19
Apr last year, so perhaps there is a trend here. Another possibility is that a
few are overwintering and over-looked until they start singing.
Good birding
