It was the Day of the Eagles at Ridgefield NWR today. At least eight BALD
EAGLES, mostly ad., were there - in the skies, on the ground, on the ice - much
to the delight of visitors, including Sabin Belknap and me. The prize was a
beautiful GOLDEN EAGLE that had been flying about before we arrived. It finally
perched in one of the large deciduous trees at Point 13 on the Auto Tour Route
map, affording close views of the rich tawny nape and large, strongly hooked
bill.
Two of the three RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS seen earlier in the day were still in the
forested stretch between Points 9 and 10.
