World Shorebirds Day

Dear Barbara,
With World Shorebirds Day at the corner and the already running Global
Shorebird Counts, we are getting busier in the first days of September. In
most parts of the Northern Hemisphere, we say goodbye to our shorebirds,
while friends in the Southern Hemisphere are welcoming the returning winter
visitors. What a wonderful annual phenomenon it is.
The Global Shorebird Counts kicked off on the 1st of September, and we have
already received 55 eBird checklists. It will be hard to beat the previous
year’s record with 1,615 checklists, but after all, it is not a competition
between years. The pandemic still doesn’t make it easy as there are still
numerous countries with lockdown or restrictions.
If you feel you can safely contribute your shorebird data from 1-7
September, please share your eBird checklists with us using our eBird
username *WorldShorebirdsDay*. To learn more about the program, please

World Shorebirds Day is on the 6th of September, and it’s a pleasure to see
activities in honour of our global celebration of shorebirds. Birds

has been a long-time supporter of World Shorebirds Day. Their members are
actively supporting the Global Shorebird Counts each year. They released a
new video as an appreciation of World Shorebirds Day and I invite you to

Support the efforts of World Shorebirds Day

Water crisis
2021 set yet another record hot year, and we have been witnessing the loss
of a considerable amount of freshwater around the world. For decades, bird
conservationists have highlighted the importance of bird monitoring what
can give us early signals of the decreasing conditions of our environment.
While birds deserted the drying out lakes, we are facing a global
freshwater issue that was unimaginable just a few decades ago.
World Shorebirds Day is now running under the umbrella of the Shorebird
Conservation Society. We dedicate the year ahead as the ‘Year of Freshwater
Bodies’ and the importance of maintaining these habitats for migrating and
resident shorebirds. We will bring case studies where wetlands were
restored or created from scratch. The Shorebird Conservation Society aims
to initiate restoration projects as well. If you know about such projects
or have any ideas, please message us.
Moving to a cheaper email service
In the next few months, we make preparations to move to a new email
campaign service. It will require us to re-sign up for our newsletter. We
will send out notifications about this change in time. Thank you for your
understanding.
