AND an Osprey seen catching a carp at West Whitaker Pond in North Portland on
the 1/5/08 Portland CBC - later seen, as I recall, elsewhere on count.

Never dismiss Osprey in January. There were two teams reporting the species
on the Coquille Valley CBC this year. Multiple teams sometimes report them on
the Coos Bay CBC,l saw two at once a few years ago. I was on a team for the
Yaquina CBC that saw an Osprey at the city water facility. And for those who
would hasten to talk about climate change, there was an Osprey on the Eugene
CBC about 1973.

Walking my property yesterday, I noticed a raptor in the distance and lifted
my binoculars to see what it was. I did an immediate double-take — the first
thing I noticed was its head, and with the heavy black eyestripe my first
reaction was, osprey, but of course I knew that could not be, not in January.
When I saw the markings below I knew it wasn’t an osprey, but I still did not
know what it was. Checked Sibley’s and saw it was a third year bald eagle.
Never realized its head was so osprey-like. Nice to learn something new.
