Hi all,
At around 8:15 AM during today's Airlie-Albany CBC, I saw a slightly
larger teal swimming with a Green-winged Teal flock. It had a very
pronounced dark line through the eye, with whitish areas above and
below. The feathers on the back looked fairly contrasty/scaly.
My thoughts immediately ran to Garganey, with female Blue-winged Teal as
the other main possibility. But the light was less than ideal (snowing a
bit at the time) and unfortunately I'd left my camera in a different
vehicle than the one that I started the day with.
Stefan Schlick and Jamie Boulton covered the same ponds toward the end
of the day but didn't see the bird. So we might need to let this one go as
"Teal sp." unless there's a follow-up sighting.
The location is in a private residential community which has generally
been good about tolerating occasional visits by local birders to scope
these ponds, but traffic might be a concern (if the bird returns and
does turn out to be a Garganey). I didn't manage to contact the
management today so I'll try to do that first thing tomorrow, to see
what kind of ground rules they'd request.
