OBOL,
The Oregon Birding Association (OBA) Board indicates that they receive
questions from people who are confused about the OBA relationship to OBOL.
I do not know the origins of OBOL, as I wasn’t around when it spawned, but
I think that when I came on board maybe 10 years ago, OBOL was being hosted
at an Oregon college or university. [I could be wrong about that, and I
trust someone on this listserv who knows about that will correct me.]
At any rate, I don’t believe OBOL was ever hosted by, or owned by, or was
a subset of, OBA (OFO in the olden days). It is my understanding that the
two have naturally had an alliance and functioned, in a way, side-by-side;
the OBA Board has been gracious enough to give OBOL a page on their
website, and even to write and revise the guidelines, although subscribers
to OBOL are not tied to OBA in any way and are free to participate in the
listserv without joining that organization.
The current Board, in an effort to clarify that the relationship between
themselves and OBOL is simply one of sympathetic friends who are interested
in the same subject matter, has eliminated the OBOL page on their website
and instead inserted a page of “listservs that we recommend,” which
includes OBOL, but OBOL does not stand out in any way. The page is here:

This means of course that the guidelines they wrote for OBOL have also
been dissolved. I guess we should write some up. If you have any
suggestions for what you’d like to see or say, please write me privately.
