Still there, one seen, more heard. Skyliner is the area in Deschutes
county going 10 miles west of Bend on Galveston Avenue, heading toward
Tumalo Falls. Parking is available just beyond the bridge. The FR 430
road is walkable but we did not have grosbeaks up there. See below.
Wednesday birders got lucky with timing. We first birded at the bridge
over the creek and while standing on the bridge, we had a bird fly into
a small lodgepole snag beside the bridge. It stayed there and sang so
all of us saw it. There were other birds singing in the direction of
downstream but we could not find them. Our bird left and flew toward
them, not seen again. We saw Chuck and Dorothy on their way up so
hopefully the Pine Grosbeaks came back for them.
We walked the 430 road to the gate stopping frequently. One Pileated
Woodpecker, poorly seen by only 3 people was the main excitement heading
up and on the return trip coming down, a few Gray Jays called to us and
made brief appearance.
Steve Edwards has feeders up on Bear Wallow area and had some birds
there, but most were leaving as we arrived. We could only identify
several Mountain Chickadees and a couple of Gray Jays in his yard.
The road and the snow are a mess up there, heavy slush in the turnaround
at the old lodge. The FR 430 was wet and soft but everyone did fine with
