The Malheur NWR Auto Tour Route is a self guided exploration of the Refuge's
open access areas. This drive takes you through the heart of the Refuge over
42 miles of breathtaking landscape views, rich geological and cultural
history along with an abundance of wildlife to observe! Enjoy the FREE
accompanying CD or downloadable audio to escort you along the way. Take
advantage of this unique opportunity to encounter renowned birders stationed
at the following key places of interest; Refuge HQ, Buena Vista Overlook,
Benson Pond, P Ranch, & Page Springs.
For Optional Transportation: 2 Van will leave from Burns HS and return by

Kenn Kaufman is an American author, artist, naturalist, and conservationist,
known for his work on several popular field guides of birds and butterflies
in North America. Born in South Bend, Indiana, Kaufman started birding from
the age of six and began sharing his love of nature with us through his first
book, Kingbird Highway (1997).
7:00 PM Alan Contreras; The Fine Arts at Malheur
Alan Contreras is a renowned American writer, poet, birdwatcher, and
education consultant. He is best known for his contributions to Oregon
ornithology and his work in higher education. His most recent publication
through OSU Press, Edge of Awe, is a compelling anthology gathers together
personal impressions of the Malheur-Steens country.

support the Friends of Malheur NWR's commitment of $4,500 towards the 2019 NW
Youth Corps Tribal Stewards Program.

8:30 AM - 12:00 PM & 1:00 - 4:30 PM Friends Guided Tours: Sign up for a van
tour of either Boca Lake or Double O units of the Refuge. You will be lead by
one of FOMR's Board Members who have extensive history with Malheur Refuge
including many years of biological work.
Double O Unit - Unique unto itself, the "Wilds" of the Double O unit of the
Malheur National Wildlife Refuge are a blend of playas, dunes, meadows, lakes
and ponds. This western most region of the Refuge provide excellent feeding
for shorebirds on receding mudflats and alkali playas. You will be guided by
one of the Friends of Malheur's Birding Aficionados and Board Member. From
swallows to ducks to swans and eagles, the list can often reach twenty-five
species!
