"Shorebirds" by Hayman, Marchant and Prater says Greater Sandplover lacks a
white hind collar. The attached photo, gleaned from the internet, was given the
label of a bird of that species. It was taken at an unspecified location in
October, 2012. I could consider the photo to have been given an improper label
if it was the only one showing a white hind collar on that species, but it
isn't. This particular photo may be the most exceptional, but in the rest of
on-line photos of Greater Sandplover, there is a small percentage of other
birds showing a white hind collar. Can anyone explain the discrepancy between
the statement in "Shorebirds" and the photos? Or can anyone explain why a few
birds show the white hind collar and most do not?
