Linda Fink recruited me to walk an area of the Upper Nestucca CBC to look
for a Wrentit. After 2 hours I had found none. The area had previously
been a young plantation of D.fir and we had found birds there. Now the
trees are 30' tall and the lower branches have closed out any understory of
brush. Hence, no Wrentits. My best find was a CANADA JAY at a clearcut on
Gilbert Cr Rd. Linda found a Wrentit elsewhere.
Fri. Dec 17.
At 9 AM I was at exit 123 off I-84, starting my North Gilliam County Raptor
Route. Shy overcast, no views of the Cascades today. Temperatures 33 - 41,
125 miles. Modest numbers of raptors: 20 Red-tails, 7 Kestrels, 1 Harrier,
1 Bald & 3 Golden eagles, 7 Rough-legs, 2 Cooper's Hawks. Modest numbers of
Horned Larks. Fog in Condon at the end of the day.
Sat. Dec 18
Partly sunny. Temps 35 - 54. Still no view of the Cascades. WINDY ALL DAY.
150 miles. Birds were kept way down (see Tim Rodenkirk's report on Port
Orford CBC). 4 Red-tails, 3 Kestrels, 2 Harriers, 1 Bald Eagle, 6
Rough-legs. I tried for Common Redpolls at a reported spot on Lost Valley
Rd, but I was sharing the spot with a Cooper's Hawk during the 20 minutes I
had to spend there, so alas, no luck.
Sun. Dec 19
Gresham CBC. Rain all day. 70 Crows. I did get to see Salish Ponds, which
I'd only heard about. Found a Brown Creeper and a Pileated Woodpecker. My
179th CBC; my 58th unique Oregon CBC.
And on the fifth day I rested.
