I birded some of the Florence area, northward into Lincoln Co. yesterday.
Didn't see anything exotic, but the decent morning weather afforded a nice
enough show of birds.
The north jetty "mudflats" (a proper pond now) had a decent-sized flock of
BUFFLEHEAD and a single GREAT EGRET. The north jetty beach and rocks area
had at least 17 BLACK TURNSTONES, a flock of ~100 SANDERLINGS (with four
DUNLIN mixed in), a WESTERN GREBE, and a lonely-looking SAVANNAH SPARROW in
the beach grass near the parking lot. SURF SCOTERS were plentiful in both
spots.
The south jetty Dog Pond had a relatively large flock of YR WARBLERS (most
appeared Myrtle), several WC SPARROWS, and a FOX SPARROW. Not much
waterfowl, though.
I birded the Sutton Beach path briefly and had a couple of WRENTITS, but
nothing else worth reporting.
I moved up the coast, stopping at Stonefield and Bob Creek, and the wind
and tide were becoming a problem by then. It was windy enough in Yachats
that I gave up on spotting a Palm Warbler or Tropical Kingbird. I grabbed a
coffee and pastry instead, and headed back home.
