Hello folks,
I headed out to the North Prairie Overlook at Finley NWR between rain
squalls this morning to check on the super-early GRASSHOPPER SPARROW(S)
that have been reported in recent days. Around 10 am, I heard one bird
giving its distinctive buzzy song several times from about 100 yards due
south of the platform. I was unable to get a visual. Several SAVANNAH
SPARROWS were singing nearby for comparison.
I also found one early CLIFF SWALLOW in a flock of about 75 TREE and a
dozen VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS that were circling over the mitigation wetland
NE of the observation platform.
A small flock of 5 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE flew overhead, heading north.
A couple of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were still working the prairie.
Happy Spring Birding!
Hendrik
