I have many of the recent editions of field guides in print, but I'm
getting the most satisfaction now from the free Cornell Merlin app on my
Android phone. I'm finding numerous opportunities to pull it up when a non-
or beginning birder asks about a vaguely described bird they've seen, or an
unrecognized bird sound.

I know, it includes only 400 species (more are promised) but it almost
certainly includes the bird described to me. Several pretty good photos,
sounds, and maps included as well.
