Hello All,
After sifting through hundreds of LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS south of the Royal
observation platform, the continuing RED KNOT was found with a couple dozen
GREATER YELLOWLEGS that have been hanging out along the reed beds on the north
side of Royal Avenue. Twelve PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were on the mud there, but no
dowitchers were in sight. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR flew overhead near the west end of
Royal, rattling and calling "tew" notes, appeared to put down in or near the
burn area near the Royal parking area. We took a quick look at the area on our
way out, but did not see it again.
The refuge will be closed next week, Oct 10-14. It will be open Oct 15-Jan 29
daily until 2 PM. Hunting is allowed daily until 1 PM. The area is closed to
public use after 2 PM except for Royal Avenue and the trail to the viewing
platform.
Good Birding,
