struck us as different from Black.

This is the best I was able to get yesterday.
Not that I'm an expert, but in the online photo that I saw, the female common
scoter seems to have a straighter bill than the one shown in the photo. Whereas
the female black scoter photos that I've seen also seem to have the downturn at
the tip of the bill, as shown in the attached photo.
