Graduate student Greg Hayward was doing research on the owls in the River of No Return wilderness in central Idaho. Later Boreal Owls were found in northern Idaho, then NE Washington. By October 1987 Bart Welton detected them in NE Oregon. Dave Herr saw the first BOREAL OWL in the NW corner of Wallowa county on Oct. 14-15, 1988. Then the hunt was on among Oregon birders. My experience: Oct. 29, 1988 2 mi S of Squaw Springs c.g. on USFS Rd. 64, NW Wallowa county with Tom & Barb Winters We heard the "skew" call or scold as a bird circled us for 45 minutes. Finally it sat in view and Tom got the first photo of a Boreal Owl in Oregon.
