OBOL:

I first heard of Boreal Owls in the Pacific Northwest when I worked the
Wildlife Department at the University of Idaho in 1981. Graduate student
Greg Hayward was doing research on the owls in the River of No Return
wilderness in central Idaho. Later Boreal Owls were found in northern
Idaho, then NE Washington. By October 1987 Bart Welton detected them in NE
Oregon. Dave Herr saw the first BOREAL OWL in the NW corner of Wallowa
county on Oct. 14-15, 1988. Then the hunt was on among Oregon birders.

My experience:
Oct. 29, 1988 2 mi S of Squaw Springs c.g. on USFS Rd. 64, NW Wallowa
county with Tom & Barb Winters
We heard the "skew" call or scold as a bird circled us for 45 minutes.
Finally it sat in view and Tom got the first photo of a Boreal Owl in
