The EURASIAN WIGEON that for several weeks was on Ridgefield NWR's Long Lake
(the snag-filled body of water on the left shortly after you enter the refuge)
was back today (if it ever left), only now on Horse Lake, the low depression
just to the east. It was associating, now as then, with a number of American
Wigeons.
A very dark GREAT HORNED OWL was in the ash woods just past the trailhead to
the Kiwa Trail. The bird appeared almost black as it flew in front of the car,
showing why the subspecific name of the Pacific coastal race, Dusky Horned Owl,
is apt. (The rain may have had something to do with it, too.)
TUNDRA SWAN numbers were in the tens, rather than the hundreds, as they have
been for the past several weeks. Amazingly, no CACKLING GEESE were to be seen
at all (at least, that Sabin Belknap and I could find).
