The past two days brought two unusual visitors to our Eugene/Santa
Clara-area backyard. On Saturday, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW made an appearance.
They used to be somewhat regular in the winter at our location but have
been very unusual in the last 15 years or so once the surrounding fields
were developed. This is the first October record in 25 years of record
keeping.
A WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH was seen on Sunday. This is only the third
sighting in 25 years at this location and it's also the only October
record. Previous detections have been in August and September. There is no
suitable habitat for this species for miles around.
