I spent the morning birding nw of Eugene with Tye Jeske. Highlights included
the Harris’s Sparrow at Bond Rd., a dark Rough-legged Hawk west of Junction
City, a couple of small swan flocks and a remarkable feeding swarm on the lake
at the west end of Fern Ridge Dam that included 64 Am White Pelicans, at least
200 Common Mergansers and almost as many DC Cormorants.
Bald Eagles were in sight essentially all the time on our entire perambulation.
Lots of kestrels, modest numbers of red-tails, a Turkey Vulture southwest of
the airport and a zoom-by dark Merlin on Bond Rd were raptical highlights,
along with an imm. Red-shouldered Hawk at the junction of 99 and Hulbert Lk.
Rd. in s. Benton Co.
I’m not sure what a “normal” number of pelicans is anymore, but 64 in
mid-January strikes me as quite a pile.
Also of possible note is that Savannah Sparrows were active in a number of
locations in small packets or singles.
