Early this morning, Sunday, while lying in bed, I heard several waves of
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE pass overhead. This is the earliest detection
by two days of this species in 25 years of records at our North
Eugene/Santa Clara-area home. Also seen today were first-of-season CACKLING
GEESE, the timing of which ties the earliest record.
Seen this afternoon was a MERLIN harassing a crow. The Merlin was the first
September record at our location.
Today we also noted seven new species for the date--47 cumulative in 25
years--a number that occurs only on the rarest of occasions after such an
extended period of record keeping.
