I was hoping to complete an ABA eider grand slam today.
Instead I had an very enjoyable experience studying an understimated ID
case.
I'm pretty sure it is indeed a WW Scoter, but in poor evening and morning
light
one could easily be nonplussed. I've spent an hour or more now studying
field
guides and web photos (many of which are misidentified) re: the Netarts
duck.
The bill shape is one distinguishing feature, only visible upon close
examination.
Very enjoyable experience. Complemented by Paul Sullivan who was also at
the site.

PS I spent the rest of the rainy day birding around Tillamook, searching
for the Real (Eider) Thing.
Amazingly, I was successful in locating a *male* steller's eider (no ID
problem) in Tillamook.
So the day was successful on many levels.
