Hi Folks, GWF Geese: While working in west Sutherlin on May 3, two flocks came over, totalling about 195 birds. Haven't been outside as much, and haven't seen others since then. TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS: On my way to some work in Sutherlin today, I stopped "quickly" by Ford's Pond to just see if anything big and obvious was flying around, but curiosity got the best of me when it seemed like I could hear Tricolored Blackbirds way out. They have been here in some past years, and I thought I may have heard them a week or two ago. Plus, there were some shorebirds in the same area, so, I hiked out there. Sure enough, there is a small colony of these blackbirds on the second "island" just north of the dike at the south end of the reservoir (separating the small full water area from the larger lower water area). They spend a lot of time IN the blackberries, so they are not very easy to see, but usually one or two males are perched in a visible location making for easy ID, and their growling-cat-like calls are distinctive. A fuzzy but identifiable photo of one of the males is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/matthewghunter/8716075282/in/photostream SHOREBIRDS: Between the Tricolored Blackbird colony island and the dike is some exposed mud where there were 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 14 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, plus 1 LEAST SANDPIPER. Photo of a few dowitchers and one yellowlegs is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/matthewghunter/8714955377/in/photostream After not getting much work done, I went to Plat I Reservoir for a late lunch, where there were 3 breeding-plumaged HORNED GREBES. Also, several PURPLE MARTINS were flying around and visiting the white nest gourds out near the snag patch. MIGRANT SONGBIRDS: Several places over the last few days have had a number of YELLOW WARBLERS. Today working in west Sutherlin, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was calling and singing from the huge Scots Broom patch up Dovetail Lane/Scardi Blvd, above the golf course. Matt Hunter Melrose, OR
