*Detroit Flats and Willamette Natl. Forest Trip Report*
Roy Gerig, Tim Johnson and I took a trip to Detroit Flats and the
Willamette National Forest (NF 2225) today to seek out any migrants that
might have settled down there. It was a nice day as it did not rain and
the temperatures were mainly in the 50s. We started at Detroit Flats
because there was cloud cover at the higher elevations. However, by the
time we got ready to go up NF 2225 the clouds had lifted giving us some
clearing skies. The bird activity was good overall with a total of 52
species identified (seen and/or heard). The most exciting thing was the
diversity of birds we observed including warblers (7), flycatchers (5),
swallows (5) as well as hearing grouse and an owl. I will describe some of
these sightings below.
The highlights were as follows:
- We observed seven (7) warbler species including ORANGE-CROWNED, MAC
GILLIVRAY’S, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK-THROATED GRAY,
HERMIT and WILSON’S WARBLERS. We got decent looks at all the warblers with
the exception of the BLACK-THROATED GRAY and HERMIT WARBLERS;
- We saw five (5) flycatchers including HAMMOND’S, GRAY, DUSKY,
PACIFIC-SLOPE and WESTERN KINGBIRD. Most of the flycatchers were seen at
or near Detroit Flats;
- Saw five (5) swallow species including NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED, TREE,
VIOLET-GREEN, BARN and CLIFF SWALLOWS;
- We heard three SOOTY GROUSE near the four (4) mile marker of NF 2225;
- Two of us heard a NORTHERN PYGMY OWL on NF 2225 near mile marker 4;
- About half way on the way down NF 2225 we saw two BLACK BEAR cubs on a
tree scraping bark off the tree. The tree had quite a bit of bark
missing. The two bears scampered off in the opposite direction once they
saw us.
