around in spite of lots of cotoneaster berries. Nothing seems to favor
them. But in a pinch robins resort to them.

As this cold spell wears on, American Robins really seem to be under
stress. Yesterday I was on an errand to Woodburn and came across a flock
of at least 100 robins that were feeding on fallen fruit below what I
guessed was a quince or apple tree (whatever it was, the fruit still
hanging on the tree was greenish yellow).
The robins were almost shoulder to shoulder as they fed under the tree
-- so densely packed that my initial impression was that they were
quail. As group of pedestrians came by, the robins barely moved off the
sidewalk to get out of their way.
Thirty or forty more robins were standing around looking listless and
puzzled on nearby lawns, in areas that were bare of snow but with the
ground still frozen too hard to yield any worms.
On the drive up & down Hwy 99W, I noticed that Great Blue Herons,
Killdeer, and other birds were crowding into the ditches wherever there
was a strip of thawed ground, heedless of the cars whizzing by at 60
mph.
It's good thing for birds that this cold snap is slated to break today!
