Least Bittern came to my mind rather quickly. But Pied-billed Grebe makes these
kind of noises. A young bird could be making imperfect efforts. Pure
speculation, but more likely than a BBCU by three orders of magnitude. I agree
the time of year for BBCU is at its peak of probability , with BBCU, like
Ruby-throated Hummer, frequenting the aspen parklands of the prairie provinces

I live on Bradley Lake and walk the trail across the Lake from the dock daily
and have since 2006. I have not heard a call even remotely close to this in all
that time. That said, what an addition that would be to my County list. Will
continue
to listen for it.

Tom — Could your bird have been a Least Bittern? Their main vocalization sounds
very much like the BB Cuckoo vocalization you cite at xeno canto, and if(?) I’m
correctly remembering & envisioning the location you’re describing, it is a
lake edge
ringed with cattails, no? Of course, Least Bittern would be nearly as
unexpected as BB Cuckoo! But likely more re-findable. - Jay

I had a great morning in southern Curry County yesterday before the NNW winds
started picking up late morning (rocking my parked car) and shut me down. The
BROWN BOOBY continues on the orange-flagged buoy/tower from the (temporarily
closed) BLM boat launch.
In Curry, the ocean at Harbor was very generous, including a flyover BOBOLINK.
What I wanted ro report, however, was a two note call at the parking area for
the Bradley Lake dock that was (fasten seat belts) a dead ringer for
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO. I played tapes
and hung around for 5+ minutes with zero response. Right tone quality, pitch,
