The Corvallis CBC was held on Saturday, December 21, 2013 under pleasant conditions – dry, with temperatures in the 40’s. and only small patches of fog. However, there was a lingering impact from the 8-inch snowfall followed by a week of frigid weather earlier in the month. The total number of species seen was 123, which is about average, but lower than many recent counts. Teams reported frozen water at many of the shallower ponds and sloughs and counters reported working harder than usual to come up with sparrows and finches. Several teams reported remarkably few Killdeer in their area. No rarities were found. Good birds for this count include: Mountain Quail Lewis’s Woodpecker Trumpeter Swan Cinnamon Teal Redhead Virginia Rail Least Sandpiper Thayer’s Gull Orange-crowned Warbler Common Yellowthroat Swamp Sparrow Lapland Longspur (on property not open to the public) Evening Grosbeak Like many other counts that have been held this year, no Pine Siskins were seen (reported from 40 of 51 counts).
