The Corvallis CBC was held on Saturday, December 21, 2013 under pleasant
conditions – dry, with temperatures in the 40’s. and only small patches of
fog. However, there was a lingering impact from the 8-inch snowfall followed
by a week of frigid weather earlier in the month. The total number of species
seen was 123, which is about average, but lower than many recent counts. Teams
reported frozen water at many of the shallower ponds and sloughs and counters
reported working harder than usual to come up with sparrows and finches.
Several teams reported remarkably few Killdeer in their area.

No rarities were found. Good birds for this count include:

Mountain Quail

Lewis’s Woodpecker

Trumpeter Swan

Cinnamon Teal

Redhead

Virginia Rail

Least Sandpiper

Thayer’s Gull

Orange-crowned Warbler

Common Yellowthroat

Swamp Sparrow

Lapland Longspur (on property not open to the public)

Evening Grosbeak

Like many other counts that have been held this year, no Pine Siskins were seen
(reported from 40 of 51 counts). Other notable misses include:

Northern Shrike (seen in 45 counts)

Ring-billed Gulls (39 counts)

Also –

Golden Eagle

Prairie Falcon
