Tom Mickel sent me a bird sighting from the Nature Conservancy Legacy Club
donor trip to the south coast- they found and photographed an EASTERN
KINGBIRD at the Port Orford Heads on 29 Aug.
Today a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was in the same general location Nagi and
Taghrid reported it on 1 Sep on N Spit Coos Bay. I saw the bird on the
third. It had a dark cap and was rather “smudgy” looking to me. Today’s (5
Sep) juvie had no cap, was not smudgy looking at all but bright and crisp
looking as I remember juvies being- I therefore think this is a 2nd bird. I
was out there yesterday and saw no Buff-breasted either for what it is
worth.
Eric Clough found a VAUX’S SWIFT roost in downtown Coos Bay recently while
walking over to the Front Street Community Bike shop which he started up a
few months ago (great shop!). He even has a bird list on the wall for the
shop which I thought was way cool. Anyhow, we saw about 60 swifts go into a
smaller chimney at an apartment building between 0755-0807. Fun to have
finally found one in town here- there were several other non-birder types
enjoying the show also.
September rocks- happy birding all!
