On Saturday Steve Kornfeld and I did some birding around the Coos Bay area.
At the east end of Virginia St. in N Bend we found one Palm Warbler. Fossil
Point in the Empire area of Coos Bay had a nice assortment of waterfowl
plus the Long-tailed Duck. At Millicoma Steve saw the Harris’s Sparrow at
the seed after I left- early AM I saw the continuing yellowthroat and OC
Warbler there.
This morning I went for a dog walk at Floras Lake early. Was cold on our
walk north to New River but quickly warmed up. On the walk back I heard a
SANDHILL CRANE in the private ranchland across the river calling away- same
spot Terry Wahl found one on the PO CBC in December. Many meadowlarks
singing on walk back plus about 10 pipits and a silent Swamp Sparrow. At
the blue silos there was the Say’s Phoebe, a couple Palm Warblers, a few
bluebirds and Eric and Margaret (good seeing you two!).
In the PM the yellowthroat continued at the Winter Lake overlook near
Coquille (about a 15 min walk along the railroad tracks towards Coquille).
Also the Arago N. Mocker also continues.
Gorgeous weather with temps up to 64F both days!
The first cherry trees are flowering, the invasive Australian acacia is in
full bloom, many willows have catkins, the quince is flowering as our
several other non-native species (saw daffodils in some ranch fields today
too)- it sure feels like spring- the first male Rufous/Allen’s should show
up any day now.
