I was down in SW Coos County at dawn on Bethel Mtn. Road. I walked up it
from the quarry about 3/4s of a mile and heard two singing VESPER SPARROWS.
Interestingly on my way back down neither bird was singing so they could
have easily been missed.
Later at Face Rock in Bandon I saw two TUFTED PUFFINS and the Peregrine
that has been hanging out high up on the NE end of the rock.
On my way through Bandon I fortunately was driving slow with windows open
and heard an interesting bird singing which turned out to be a first summer
male INDIGO BUNTING just south of the Bandon Marsh NWR observation
deck (0.2 miles south at turnoff with pink flags). Looks like the 4th Coos
record which have all been between 23 May and 6 June. It stayed around for
Dave and Kathy to see it also and is still singing away as I type and was
also photographed by a local Bandon birder.
Beautiful clear, sunny morning with no wind (yet). Whoops- seems to be
kicking up now : )
