Terry Wahl reports the NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD is still hanging in Langlois.
It wintered last year also but is very elusive. On the family ranch near
Cape Blanco he saw a SNOW GOOSE, 2 OSPREY, a male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
(been there a week), and one flock of 7 PALM WARBLERS.
In Coos Bay I saw a SNOW GOOSE up Coos River in the Catching Slough
pastures and 2 SWAMP SPARROWS at the far dead end kiosk at Moldycoma Marsh.
This morning (the 11th) the male EURASIAN WIGEON continues at Mingus Park
in Coos Bay.
Lots of advection fog this morning off Cape Arago so hard to see much. Many
loons moving though (all three species) and a slick of Surf Scoters a few
miles long- many thousands of them for sure. Didn't stay long but did see a
single Bonie Gull, one BL Kittiwake, and 30 Heermann's Gulls.
In the Charleston area there were two BLACK SCOTERS, 130+ RED PHALAROPES
(all around boat basin, jetty area, South Slough), and 4 EARED GREBES. Off
Fossil Point there were three BRANT.
On the south end of the N Spit of Coos Bay about a 1/2 mile north of the
Snowy Plover nesting area there was a TROPICAL KINGBIRD flycatching from
atop a Sitka spruce.
Many flycatching CA Gulls and starlings on the N Spit, must be termites or
ants 🐜 up yonder.
Today was day 15 straight of temps over 60F in Coos Bay with a record 72 on
the 8th (normal is 56-58F). The balmy weather should continue several more
days before getting back to normal.
