Well I was a little quick on calling all the TROPICAL KINGBIRDS gone. The
two I observed on N Spit Coos Bay on the 9th are still here- they are
calling back and forth to each other as I type. They are at the 4 mile
marker on Transpacific Hwy just across road from the old Weyco settling
pond site. Displaying Anna’s Hummer here also- nice warm, sunny day!
I did a Point Blue Shorebird Survey this AM. Off Fossil Point in Empire not
much for shorebirds but did see a LT DUCK.
Over at Pigeon Point in Empire there was a nice assortment of shorebirds:
BB Plover- 42
Killdeer-8
Greater Yellowlegs-1
Marbled Godwit- 19
Black Turnstone- 12
Sanderling- 73
Western Sandpiper- 13 (best spot for them in the county in winter)
Least Sandpiper- 120
Dunlin- 128
And offshore there the best bird of the day- a male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, a
species we only see every three years or so in the county and typical only
one. They don’t last long either as the local hunters usually quickly
“collect” them. Always a treat to see.
