Hard to believe it was another sunny day in late November in Coos Bay with
only a 1/2 inch of rain all month! We had a Cape Arago Audubon trip out to
the North Spit of Coos Bay plus Empire area Coos Bay- 8 of us birded from
about 0830 to 1230.
Highlights:
Old Weyco settling pond site- great selection of waterfowl plus several
gull species including one immature BONIE GULL.
We then looked for and found the two TROPICAL Ks which were along the bay
about 3/4s of a mile east of the old Weyco settling pond site. We also saw
a RHINO AUKLET in the bay here- pretty darn far up the bay, good numbers
still present lower in the bay also.
At Pigeon Point in Empire we found a nice group of shorebirds including 14
MARBLED GODWITS. Also there were Sanderling, Dunlin, Western and Least
Sandpiper, BlackTurnstones, Killdeer, and BB Plovers. I think the Henise’s
and Barb Taylor will have eBird lists. We also refound both the male
BARROW’S GOLDENEYE and the LONG-TAILED DUCK along with a nice assortment of
ducks, grebes and loons.
