Judy Meredith and I headed over to the coast this morning to look for the
Common Ground Dove. As reported numerous times today Judy found the bird
when 8 others of us could not. We had great looks at it on the playground,
near the skateboard park and on the ground behind the Presbyterian Church.
We had a couple of Mountain Chickadees near the playground as well.

Afterwards we stopped at the overlook on Oceanview Drive (still in Yachats)
and almost immediately found a feeding frenzy of Gulls and Pelicans about
1/2 mile offshore. We had mostly cloudy skies here, but could see less than
1/2 mile on the south side of the bridge the area was engulfed in a heavy
mist. We watched a Gray Whale surface, displacing many gulls. The frenzy
was soon joined by up to 10 Black-vented Shearwaters, 6 Pink-footed and 2
Sooty Shearwaters along with hundreds of Western, California and Heerman's
Gulls. Later, while stopped for a lengthy road construction project around
Berry Creek, north of Florence, we had sunny skies and saw some activity
just beyond the breakers below. We found 4 more Black-vented Shearwaters
among the birds flying around. With the news of "thousands" of Black-vented
Shearwaters passing by Arcata heading north, now is a great time to head to
the Oregon coast.
