Columbia Estuary Report - 1/25/2018
The STELLER'S EIDER continues to be seen though the crowds of birders
that the surfers find so amusing seem to have thinned out. I actually
had the bird to myself yesterday...
A flock of at least 16 SNOW BUNTINGS is being seen (with patience) on
the beach between Sunset and Del Rey. They are most consistently seen
near the bench swing that can be seen on the dunes about half way
along the beach. Pick a low tide if you plan on driving the beach.
Other beach goodies include up 15+ BALD EAGLES working various
sea line corpses. A NORTHERN FUR SEAL was found dead on the beach
Monday.
The TRUMPETER SWANS have moved inland a bit and are now being reported
from the inter-dune lakes around the Smith Lake Cemetery in Warrenton
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS are still being reported at Ft Stevens and
across the river at Cape Disappointment, though fewer people seem to
be looking now that the magic is gone. Same seems to be true of the
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH which was heard but not seen last Sunday. Lots
of BARN SWALLOWS at Brownsmead.
There are now over 100 TUNDRA SWANS, 400+ SNOW GEESE and lots of
CANVASBACK providing stellar photo-opportunities at Svensen Island.
Try not to be a nuisance while driving on the one-lane road. Walk
if you can.
