Today, 1/20 Don Sutherland and Lowell Franks joined me on the ECAS Christmas
Valley Raptor Survey We drove 83 miles in 7 hr 20 min. under partly cloudy to
cloudy skies with light winds and temps. between 26 and 44 degrees F. It
turned out to be another great day for Rough-legged Hawk numbers with a count
of 72. That makes a total of 123 for the Ft. Rock Basin with Tuesday's 51 on
the Ft. Rock Survey. The raptors wee pretty well spread out through the
agricultural parts of the route with some hay fields a lot more productive than
others. We also spotted 4 Shrikes spp. but didn't get good enough looks to
determine species. I was surprised at the lack of paserines present out on the
desert. We saw starlings, House Sparrows, a few Magpies plus the big guys,
about 300 Common Ravens.
